Do you ever catch yourself dreaming of having picture-perfect, Instagram-worthy hair? It doesn’t have to be a dream! It might take a little work, but there are some steps you can take to make your hair look beautiful each and every day.

One of the best ways to accomplish this is by developing your own personalized hair care routine. If you’re not sure how to get started, we can help you out. Read on to learn how to create a hair care routine that works for you!

Speak with Your Stylist to Start Your Hair Care Routine

To start, you’re going to want to sit down with your hairstylist to delve into the current state of your hair. You might notice bigger issues like breakage and discoloration, but only your stylist can tell you more about what’s going on with your hair on a deeper level.

Start with the basics. Ask whether you have fine, medium, or coarse hair. Ask about your hair’s thickness and its natural texture (the amount of curl and wave in your hair).

Then you should ask about some issues that your hair might have. This can include hair or scalp dryness, oiliness, and split ends.

Knowing these simple facts will help you select the right products and develop the right routine. Your stylist can also help guide you toward the right types of products for your hair.

    Determine Your Hair Goals

Once you know what you’re working with, you’ll be able to sit down and map out some realistic goals for your hair.

If you’re dealing with dull, dry hair, you might want to take steps to enhance your hair’s shine and keep it moisturized. If your hair isn’t as long as you would like, then you’d want to craft a plan to grow it out.

We mentioned that your hair goals should be realistic because it is not always possible for you to have everything you want with your hair unless you take drastic measures. For example, if you have thin and fine hair, you’re not going to be able to have hair like Zooey Deschanel unless you invest in extensions. You can, however, take steps to make your hair look fuller without having to dump a ton of money at the salon.

    Treat the Issues

Once you know your hair goals and the current issues you’re having with your hair, you can start investing in hair products and tools that’ll help you get where you want to go.

If you have color-treated hair, you should invest in products that are moisturizing but won’t strip the color out of your hair. If you’re a blonde, you might consider purchasing a violet shampoo and conditioner that’ll help cancel out any unwanted yellowing of your hair. If you have damaged hair, buy some deep conditioning treatments with lots of protein and moisture to help your hair recover from the damage.

Determine how often you’ll use these treatments in order to create a regular hair care schedule.

    Nourish Your Hair

Did you know that what you eat and drink can have an impact on how your hair looks?

Consider adding some hair-healthy foods to your diet to boost your hair’s health. For example, eggs are full of protein and biotin, which can help with your hair growth goals. Fatty fish like salmon can also help your hair growth, and as a bonus, the omega-3s can help with your overall health, too!

Finally, consider purchasing vitamins from Sugar Bear Hair to help make sure your hair gets the nutrients it needs for optimal health.

Wash Regularly, but Not Too Often

You might think that you should wash your hair each and every day, but that is actually not great for your hair.

Washing your hair on a daily basis can dry out your strands and make them appear dull. You’ll also find that your color fades faster when you’re washing every day, especially if you’re washing with hot water.

Unless you have naturally oily hair, you can afford to skip a day or two between washes. Be sure to use both shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair moisturized. For optimal hydration, squeeze excess water out of your tresses before applying the conditioner.

If you’re dealing with flat hair, remember to apply conditioner to the ends and not to the roots.

Need shine? Blast your hair with cold water before you get out of the shower to smooth your hair’s cuticles and boost shine.

    Post-Shower Tips

What you do when you’re out of the shower is going to depend on your hair care goals. That said, invest in a nice comb and a detangling spray for use on wet hair. Wet hair is fragile, and hairbrushes tend to break the delicate strands.

Once you’ve combed out your hair, apply any product you need to help you meet your goals. This can include smoothing serums for those who want straight hair and volumizing products for those who want more volume and body.

Minimize heat styling if you’re dealing with dry or damaged hair. Consider washing your hair the night before so you don’t have to use a blow dryer and to save time in the morning.

    Visit Your Stylist Regularly

Finally, keep going back to your stylist for all of your major hair needs.

Go back once every three to six months for a trim, and avoid coloring your hair at home if you can. This is especially important advice for anyone who is hoping to lighten dark hair or hair that has already been colored.

Your hairstylist can tell you if your current hair care routine is working, or if you need to take some additional steps to amp up the results.

Taking Care of Your Hair Isn’t Complicated

Developing a hair care routine is a great way to keep you happy and satisfied with the state of your hair. It’ll also help you cut down on the amount of time you spend on your hair each day. Make sure to keep your goals realistic and you’ll be on the way to hair nirvana.

    Happy styling!
